Tino pai. The media stuff to date looks gloomy, but there is a lot we can continue to do. The only one that believes the National Standards will be impemented is the Minister. I believe she is in for a surprise!

Morena koutou
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa i enei ahutanga o te wa.
I have attached a copy of the website for Unite Union - a union with many
low paid workers - they are asking people to sign in support for a citizens
initiated referendum to increase the adult minimum wage in steps over
the next three years, starting with an immediate rise to $15 per hour.
They need 300,000 signatures before 1st May 2010. Can you
please circulate the address through your networks to help. The
address for completed petitions is on the form you can download from the website. A victory will make it easier to lift all wages.

Kia ora Fiona, I am delighted to add you as a friend and really please to see this IT initiative being implemented. It is a way of wider sharing and a guarantee that all voices can be heard. I was also perturbed at the pace of radical change and like Chris, I was concerned at the changes in processes that enabled people to speak or not to speak on the floor of Annual Meeting. I believe that when major changes take place there is a greater need for transparency as well as a greater need for trust. Together, trust and transparency help to smooth the way for change to take place and change is necessary. All living organisms change and adapt - or die. I also think that we need to address different ways of making decisions. Majority rules is a win / lose type of decision making that has advantages and disadvantages as does consensus. Unfortunately most organisations only operate under one form of decison making. It would seem to me that being truly 'Stronger Together' a union would have a stronger rather than lesser imperative for exploring ways of consensus and unity at a constitutional level as well as in the metaphorical and rhetor ical level - too many words, too late at night SORRY! Have a great term 4! Ka kite ano, Erika

Hi Fiona,
Good on you for reading this site. Be pleased to know that your courage in voting against the rest of national executive for a remit certainly got my vote. I have huge concerns about the direction of NZEI Te Riu Roa at the moment and see this site as a real opportunity to share thoughts. My biggest concern is that I believe many representatives came to AM having had little opportunity to discuss "The Changes" as promulgated and needed to hear a more balanced viewpoint (for and against) on the floor of AM. This was stifled by the president's decision to allow regional speaking which was not balanced. Some of the offerings seemed to be platitudinuous garbage. But it is members democratic right to speak as they see fit. I believe democracy went out the window with the presidential embargo on Auckland ADC getting a fair shake. We have 90 representatives over our 14 branches and often we got 3 or fewer speakers up. It seems to me that Christchurch branch and ourselves were the only people who actually understood the issues. The president talked in her final speech about the need to build bridges. These are going to have to be solid because I believe this meeting caused more damage to the institute than all the other events in the number of times I have been. One of our members have called for Christchurch and Auckland branches to form a breakaway union - a little far-fetched, but some indication of the anger at the way things were done.
Congratulations on getting on to National Executive.
Kia kaha, kia manawanui!!! Aroha, Chris
